As the church calendar entered its second week of Lent, the parishioners of the Church of Divine Mercy (CDM) Penang were gently reminded of the theme of “Love” that was printed in its Lenten Card for this year. This was one of the seven themes identified by the parish to assist its parishioners keep their faithful journey of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving during Lent.
In line with this aim, the Ministry of Hospitality at CDM decided to organize a Blood Donation and Free Health Screening for its parishioners. The event was held after the morning mass on the 12th March and attracted over 90 people of different ages. They were screened for blood pressure and random blood sugar level. In addition, an optician was on hand to do eye tests and provide consultation on eye problems. 34 people donated blood, some as young as 18 years, doing it for the first time. Over ten people were turned away due to low blood count. Even though they were quite disappointed, the received the consolation that they were alerted of their health condition and were given advice to overcome it. One new donor was so pleased that she could give this gift of life as she was rejected last year. There were also three people who pledged their organs.
he event was graced by the presence of YB Sim Tze Tzin (Member of Parliament for the area) and State Councilor Kumaresen Arumugam. Both gentlemen gave much praise to those organizing this event and were given the assurance that it would continue to be an annual event at CDM. YB Sim also signed and gave out appreciation certificates to the staff of the General Hospital of Penang and the nearby Health Clinic who came to assist in this event. There were also two doctors on hand as well as some current and retired nurses of the parish who came forward to help. All volunteers were invited to lunch at the end of the event. This was a good way to bring about greater awareness of the things we take for granted in our health and the great gift of life we can be to others.
